What is a Translum?

The Savage Universal offers a unique setting called Translum that gives to photographers perhaps the most useful material available to white backdrops.
This is because the Translum not only works very well in this direction, but also happens to be the best friend of a photographer when it comes to turning the light.
This translucent roller wrinkle-free styrene (a type of plastic) is similar to a scroll with plasticized cotton paper which is popular for architectural models.
Due to its opaque properties, Translum acts as a highly efficient diffuser when placed over a light source. Think of frosted glass effect.
The Translum's ability to soften the light helps reduce unwanted reflections. Photographers often use it to get a look almost no shadows that can be very attractive and hard to get otherwise.
It is easy to use, because if a piece does not do the trick, you can simply stack pieces until the light seems right.

The Translum invites improvisation in the studio. You can even position lights behind it to get a clear silhouette.
Considering all that Translum is capable of, it's no surprise that many photographers consider it indispensable for portraits, product photography, and many other applications where you want a subtle control over the lighting.

Versatile and reusable

The Translum offers a dynamic alternative to paper backgrounds.
Considering the role seamless is a popular choice for a white background, Translum is a more durable material that can be cleaned with mild soap to restore its original whiteness after a session.
Wonderful Translum diffusion qualities make it an ideal choice for a setting. It is perfect for high-key situations. Many photographers enjoy light it back to create a smooth white background that eliminates texture.
A background paper cloth, however, would show the texture lit in this way. When lit from the front, Translum will give excellent results similar to those of seamless paper.
When not used as a backdrop, the Translum is perfect for the spread of on-the-fly light. Some choose to hang it from whole body to the Translum come from ceiling to floor to create a large soft-box with a couple of flash drives.
It can also be placed in front of a window or door open to diffuse natural light. The shadows will never be harder than the window illuminated by the sun!
The versatility of Translum is limited only by the imagination of the photographer. Two scissors make quick work of it, as Translum can easily be cut into any shape or roll size x 18 feet 54 inches.
Because Translum curving can be manipulated in almost any setting that might need. Some objects simply will not work in a tent with light tradcional table-top, whereas with Translum, adapt a perfect size tent for your baby will never be a problem.
A Translum roll is relatively cheap considering all that you can do with it, becoming one of the most efficient means of creating light diffusers customized to your projects. And once your trip is done, you will be able to re-use the parts next time.
If you need a continuous light box, then the Translum makes it all possible. By placing the Translum on a glass box, or just above a glass sheet supported by a pair of trestles, the Translum will allow light to flow upwards.
If you've seen glass photo sculptures or jewelry lit from below, it is likely that you were to see a Translum in action.
As mentioned, it is also possible to try to put lights behind a Translum sheet so that a silhouette wave is produced. You will not be able to discern details, but therein lies the beauty of this technique as this creates more impression that realism. You can even take your model to lean to the background to allow the material to mold against the silhouette.
It is even more a look that can only be had with this amazing stuff called Translum.
