The use of such a grid increases contrast as well as brilliance through suppressing stray light.

Besides this it allows a greater angle of movement between the light unit and the camera system. Why? The more bigger the opening angle between camera and light unit gets, the bigger the chance for backlighting gets. This can cause unwanted light on the front lens. Grids can help to decrease the chance of light on the front lens in a more backlighting situation, because they narrow the light beam.

Another pro of grids: cutting-off the light beam of the back- ground is much more easier.
